The 2020 edition of the history-making Chicago Women’s March is scheduled for this Saturday, January 18th.
Here’s what you need to know:
Founded in 2017 as an act of protest against the inauguration of Donald Trump, the Chicago Women’s March is an unofficial sister to the larger, national event held in D.C. This year’s rally aims to protract the message of #MakeItCount when it comes to climate justice, gun violence prevention, and health care access, as well as place focus on the upcoming 2020 elections. But the ultimate message is to uplift and celebrate the historic number of women in Illinois political offices, including, but not limited to:
- Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton
- Congresswoman Robin Kelly
- Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky
- City Treasurer Melissa Conyers-Ervin
- Mayor Lori Lightfoot
- Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford
- Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza
- Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx
- City Clerk Anna Valencia
- Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle
The protest’s main organizers have made it their mission to advocate for and empower the voices of marginalized folk across the city.
Saturday’s event will kick off around 9 am at Grant Park, the intersection between Ida B.Wells and Columbus Drives, with an accessible entrance for persons with disabilities located at Columbus Dr. and Monroe St. The march itself will occur at 11 am and will continue out of the intersection onto Columbus Drive and Jackson Street.
All who are interested are welcome to join in the Chicago Women’s March and are encouraged to make signs, posters, and flyers. And while it isn’t required, you can register to attend via Facebook or online to let organizers how many people will be there.
